Abstract

Background Staff wellbeing and satisfaction are hot topics at present for NHS employers, introducing the NHS People Plan (2019), as well as for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Wellbeing teaching was consistently requested by Newly Registered Practitioners (NRPs) in their feedback. The NHS Health and Wellbeing Framework (2018) acknowledges that poor staff health and wellbeing has a significant impact on the performance of the NHS as an organisation, and the Royal College of Physicians (2018) states that better staff wellbeing is associated with lower mortality figures.

Method Based on requests from our NRPs as well as the findings of research and reports, the Central Education Team have tried to incorporate wellbeing and self-care into their curriculum and practice. On the recently taught band 5 development programme days, aimed at practitioners around 2 years registered, there have been sessions included on mindfulness and wellbeing. The Graduate Team have also started a ‘wins-day’ email to congratulate NRPs on their good practice, as well as encouraging reflection. These emails also include monthly wellbeing challenges, encouraging and sign-posting wellbeing techniques.

Results The feedback from self-care and mindfulness teaching has been positive, saying this is a good reminder to take care of themselves, but would appreciate ‘more coping mechanisms’ being included. The wins-day email has also had good responses, with NRPs nominating their preceptors for recognition and educators nominating NRPs.

Recommendations Looking ahead, the Graduate Team are looking to incorporate well-being further in their teaching. The preceptorship programme will now include a ‘temperature check’ of all the NRPs attending the day, as well as further wellbeing and resilience teaching to be included on these study days, including practical coping mechanisms. We hope that this practice will make the NRPs feel valued, as well as happier and able to provide safe, high quality care to their patients.
