Gastro-oesophageal reflux
2004, Current PaediatricsCitation Excerpt :GORD may occur without obvious explanation, but it is very common in association with neurodevelopmental disorders and in certain congenital abnormalities such as diaphragmatic hernia and oesophageal atresia (post-repair). Various mechanisms limit reflux and protect the oesophageal mucosa.1,3 The lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS) and the angle of His (the acute angulation between the oesophagus and stomach) provide a mechanical barrier, aided by positive pressure on the segment of oesophagus lying within the abdomen.
