Otolaryngologist and pediatric oncologist perspectives on the role of fine needle aspiration in diagnosing pediatric head and neck masses
2019, International Journal of Pediatric OtorhinolaryngologyThe validation of an algorithm for the management of paediatric cervical lymphadenopathy
2016, International Journal of Pediatric OtorhinolaryngologyCitation Excerpt :Serology including Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV), Cytomegalovirus, Toxoplasma and Bartonella has been shown to help diagnose infective cases and therefore exclude malignancy [14–16] and a full blood count has been shown to be abnormal in some malignant cases [5]. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) has a high specificity of between 92% and 100%, however sensitivity varies between 67% and 100% [17–27]. As a result, FNAC cannot be relied upon in isolation to exclude malignancy in children.
When does an enlarged cervical lymph node in a child need excision? A systematic review
2014, International Journal of Pediatric OtorhinolaryngologyCitation Excerpt :The paediatric series we found are all retrospective. Three of the papers seem to report on the same cohort of children [44–46]. It should be noted that some figures in the table differ from those quoted in the papers as some re-calculations were required to make sure that data presented in the table are comparable.
Histology of solid lateral cervical masses biopsied in children
2014, International Journal of Pediatric OtorhinolaryngologyCitation Excerpt :Complications and morbidities reported are rare. Specificity and sensitivity are reported to be over 80% and 90%, respectively [28,31,33,34]. Ramadan et al. suggested using this technique not only in settings with a high suspicion for malignancy but also in cases where the suspicion is low and an operation could be avoided [33].
