Patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) are reported to have low plasma Br− levels due to lower dietary Br consumption (Dahlstrom et al., 1986), and end-stage renal disease patients have enhanced Br− losses as a consequence of dialysis (Miura et al., 2002; Oe et al., 1981; Wallaeys et al., 1986). Because Br has not been considered an essential trace element, systematic investigations on Br− replacement have not been pursued in these disease states (Nielsen, 1998).

Fe content is the highest of the essential trace elements in humans as it is widely distributed in the human body [2–4]. Not surprisingly, the serum levels of the trace minerals not supplemented in TPN were lower than the control children; no clinical deficiencies were noted.56 However, a more recent study in adults showed great fluctuations in trace mineral levels during the time on TPN when levels were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry.57

However, signs and symptoms of diabetes in the latter 2 cases were found to develop gradually, after several years of deprived Cr supply [2,37], when slowly exchanging Cr compartments become depleted.
