Still cautious: Personality characteristics of extremely low birth weight adults in their early 30s
2013, Personality and Individual DifferencesCitation Excerpt :In the past 40 years, there have been vast improvements in the survival of those born at extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000 g) and at very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) (Doyle, 2006). Although the first generation of ELBW survivors are now well into adulthood, a proportion of these individuals have struggled with problems ranging from cognitive impairments to emotional and behavioral problems, and poorer general health relative to normal birth weight (NBW) controls (Allin et al., 2006; Boyle et al., 2011; Hack et al., 2005; Levy-Shiff et al., 1994; Raikkonen et al., 2008; Saigal, Szatmari, Rosenbaum, Campbell, & King, 1990; Saigal et al., 1994). Research focusing on personality and emotional and behavioral problems in those born at ELBW is relatively scarce, as most studies have focused on the development of chronic psychiatric syndromes in those born at VLBW (e.g., Allin et al., 2006; Hack et al., 2005).
Quality of life of early school-age French children born preterm: A cohort study
2012, European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive BiologyCitation Excerpt :In the current study, proxy reports of HRQL were significantly lower for the preterm children compared with the French reference population for global scores as well as BI, Vit, PsyWB and SP scores. These results are consistent with previous studies of preschool-aged children with very low birth weight [35,36] or prematurity [39], and school-aged children with extremely low birth weight [9,10] or extreme prematurity [12]. However, contrasting results have been reported for older children.
