Pediatric Mediastinal Tumors and Tumor-Like Lesions
2016, Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRICitation Excerpt :Patients with mediastinal neuroblastoma may present with respiratory distress or Horner syndrome (if there is involvement of superior mediastinum). Paraneoplastic syndromes associated with neuroblastoma are secretory diarrhea caused by excessive production of vasoactive intestinal peptide and opsoclonus-myoclonus-ataxia syndrome, characterized by myoclonic jerks and random eye movements with or without ataxia (attributed to immune-mediated effects).50,51 These tumors are seen as well demarcated paraspinal soft tissue mass on the chest radiographs with calcification in up to 30% of patients.52
Neuroblastoma: Paradigm for precision medicine
2015, Pediatric Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Epidural or intradural tumor extension occurs in 5% to 15% of patients and may result in spinal cord compression and paraplegia.51 Two rare paraneoplastic syndromes associated with NB include secretory diarrhea caused by tumor production of vasoactive intestinal peptide52,53 and opsoclonus myoclonus ataxia syndrome (OMS). OMS is reported in 2% to 3% of patients and is commonly associated with favorable well-differentiated tumors.54,55
