Caregiver burden and disability in somatization disorder
2013, Journal of Psychosomatic ResearchCitation Excerpt :An additional causal relationship could also be hypothesized between impairments in the patient's participation in society and family members' distress (as measured by the subjective burden score), as this would suggest that family distress is mostly due to the patient's preoccupation with illness. The findings on disability in patients with SOM-D are consistent with findings from other similar conditions, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, where studies have identified deficits in activity and social functioning as a dominant feature [25–27]. As disability and burden were assessed from self-report measures, these measures may lack accuracy.
