2020, Transfusion and Apheresis ScienceCitation Excerpt :Some can present with mild to moderate disease, manifesting as fatigue, anorexia, or fever. The immunocompromised, elderly, and asymptomatic patients may develop serious illness, possibly leading to multiple organ failure [2]. Most patients are infected through tick bites, while some acquire infection through blood transfusions or congenitally via vertical transmission [1,3].
Human babesiosis in Alsace
2020, Medecine et Maladies InfectieusesCitation Excerpt :The case fatality of B. venatorum is difficult to assess as it has only been described recently. The immune status of infected patients is a known factor in the intensity and severity of the clinical picture, splenectomy being the main risk factor for a more severe clinical picture [11,12]. The parasite is usually transmitted by tick bites.
Human babesiosis
2019, International Journal for ParasitologyCitation Excerpt :The spleen is a critical immune organ for blood-borne infections, especially intraerythrocytic infections such as babesiosis. It acts immediately to limit when the sieve-like structure of splenic venules trap Babesia-infected erythrocytes and allow macrophages to ingest and kill these erythrocytes and their contents (Rosner et al., 1984; Cullen and Levine, 1987; Wright et al., 1989; Vannier and Krause, 2012). The spleen also contains B and T lymphocytes that help control infection later in the course of illness.
