The optimal score for trigger systems was determined as 1. The optimal score for scoring systems was determined as the cut-point which demonstrated the maximum value for the sum of the sensitivity and specificity, as described by Edwards et al.18 As such, this differed between different scoring systems.
The hours to event was calculated as the number of hours between the case patient's first achieving the optimal score/trigger to the occurrence of the critical deterioration event.
