Some children do not respond to oral treatment. Usually compliance is the issue and intravenous treatment becomes an option. Lucina has always been cautious about prescribing intravenous iron treatment because of potential side effects. A seminar on iron deficiency is published in the Lancet by Pasricha SR et al. [Lancet 2020 https://doi.org/10.1016/ S0140-6736(20)32594-0] and is a great review of the topic and goes back to basics but has up to date evidence and recommendations. Going back to (evidenced based) basics, for the common topics is always a good discipline. There are many new generation parenteral iron preparations and they have revolutionised therapy for ID.
