Management of pediatric pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) varies throughout Dutch hospitals. To facilitate implementation of the current Dutch PUO guideline, we aimed to determine clinical practice variation and barriers to implementation.1

Considering limited healthcare resources and high workload for healthcare practitioners, we decided to conduct a snapshot study.2 3 A snapshot study is a cross-sectional study performed in a very short period of time, providing rapid insight into current clinical practice.

This study was performed within the ‘SPIN’ network (Dutch Society for Paediatrics’ (NVK) research network for general paediatrics). SPIN aims to improve collaboration within general paediatrics by evaluating clinical care, practice variation and national healthcare evaluations, acting in coordination with the NVK’s guideline committee.
