RCPCH Stroke in Childhood Guidelines: how well are these being followed?

    Stroke is an under-recognised condition in paediatric patients despite an estimated incidence of 2.6–3.3/100 000 for ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke.1 2 Paediatric stroke has a significant morbidity with long-term disability, adverse effect on cognitive outcomes and associated mortality.2 The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) Stroke in Childhood Guidelines3 highlight the clinical features of stroke, the need to calculate a Pediatric National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (PedNIHSS), the importance of brain imaging with angiography ≤1 hour of admission and in ischaemic stroke, consideration of thrombolysis if ≤4.5 hours of symptom onset and thrombectomy.
