We have carefully read the report by Elenius et al.1 They suggested that low procalcitonin (PCT) levels in adenovirus (ADV) infections could be used as a marker for withholding antibiotic therapy.
It is well established that white blood cell (WBC) counts and serum C reactive protein (CRP) are usually high in these infections and that PCT should perform better in differentiating between ADV and bacterial infections.2 We reviewed our experience to analyse whether PCT levels impacted on antibiotic prescribing.
