UK community paediatricians work outside hospital in community child health (CCH) services, specialising in the clinical care of children and young people (CYP) with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), CYP at risk of abuse and those looked after by the local authority. They also hold statutory roles in these areas, implementing the legal duties of health commissioners. CCH service performance is poorly scrutinised.1 Ad hoc surveys show that CCH cannot meet National Health Service (NHS) access and treatment standards,2 performance that would be unacceptable in other services.
