Hypotonic fluids and hyponatraemia

Readers in Northern Ireland will be well aware of a long-running government inquiry into the deaths of a number of children in the province, over a decade ago, attributed to iatrogenic hyponatraemia. Partly as consequence of these events, a UK National Patient Safety Authority alert was issued in 2007, warning us of the dangers of routine use of hypotonic intravenous fluids.
