Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in children and adolescents are increasing worldwide. However, our medical care system seems to be inadequate to care for children with T2DM according to two large multicentre databases for obese children (APV) and children with diabetes (DPV) in Central Europe (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) summarising the quality of care in specialised diabetes and obesity treatment centres (registered children and adolescents aged 2–20 years: 54 595 overweight children in APV, 46 693 children with diabetes mellitus type 1 or 2 in DPV).
