It is gratifying that Professor Byard agrees in principal over the need for SIDS research to be continually re-assessed in regard to the ‘diagnosis’ of SIDS, and the problems associated with understanding its pathogenesis.[1] We clearly differ in our views of the epidemiology of SIDS.

We were interested in the paper by Goldwater calling for a critical review of approaches to research in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).[1]
