    Dear Editor

    Archivist draws attention to a familial susceptibility to appendicitis. This association has been recognised for over 20 years [1]. Familiarity with the familial predisposition to appendicitis might have dissuaded us from reassuring a mother that her 9 year old daughter's longstanding monthly bouts of abdominal pain and vomiting were not due to acute appendicitis.
