  In an Australian pregnancy cohort, maternal report of intimate partner violence is associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes for their children at age 10 years.

• Gestational age on trajectories of social competence difficulties into adolescence (2 March, 2021)

  In a large cohort study, children born at earlier gestational age had greater social competence difficulties at 14 years. The earlier the gestational age the greater the difficulties. Some of this difference was mediated by the presence of maternal psychological distress.

• Adjuvant corticosteroids for prevention of kidney scarring in children with acute pyelonephritis: a systematic review and meta-analysis (25 February, 2021)

  In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the authors found that adjuvant corticosteroids can prevent renal scarring to antibiotic therapy in febrile UTI. Because of moderate-quality evidence, further multicentric randomized trials with adequate sample size are needed.

• Recovery from chronic fatigue syndrome: a systematic review—heterogeneity of definition limits study comparison (12 April, 2021)

  Significant differences in definitions of recovery, result in highly varied reported recovery rates for chronic fatigue syndrome. Consensus definitions of recovery are needed, the authors recommend that recovery may be best defined from the child's own perspective.

  Social robots may reduce stress and anxiety in children admitted to hospital, but better quality research is needed before widespread adoption

• Quality of life of children treated for unilateral hearing loss: a systematic review and meta-analysis (26 February, 2021)

  This systematic review and meta-analysis of children with moderate to severe unilateral hearing loss showed quality of life was significantly improved with hearing rehabilitation.

• Influence of agents and mechanisms of injury on anatomical burn locations in children <5 years old with a scald (16 March, 2021)

  This cross-sectional study collected standardised data from 20 hospital sites in England and Wales on over 1000 children presenting acutely with scalds. Mechanisms of injury and distribution of scalds are described, with data on referrals to child protection agencies.
