Clinical and laboratory studies have shown alterations in HPA axis (Brummelte et al., 2015; Chen et al., 2016; Gover et al., 2013; Grunau et al., 2013; Holsti et al., 2007; Provenzi et al., 2016), pain response, and behavior associated with pain and stress experienced early in life (Anand, 1998; Andrews and Fitzgerald, 1994; Bouza, 2009; Fitzgerald, 2005; Grunau, 2002; Johnston et al., 2002; Oberlander et al., 2000; Ranger and Grunau, 2014; Taddio et al., 1995, 1997; Verriotis et al., 2016; Whitfield and Grunau, 2000). Although the effects of early inflammatory tissue injury on nociception in newborns has been extensively studied (Andrews and Fitzgerald, 1994; Fitzgerald, 2005; Koch and Fitzgerald, 2013), its effects on the affective component of the pain response are not as well described.
