Complications in neonatal surgery
2016, Seminars in Pediatric SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Anastomotic leak results from a small, friable lower segment, ischemia of the esophageal ends, excess anastomotic tension, myotomy, sepsis, poor suturing technique, type of suture, excessive mobilization of the distal pouch, and increased gap length.33 The incidence is approximately 15%, but has been reported to be as high as 27%.10 Interestingly, one study observed an increased rate of anastomotic leak if the operation was performed “after hours” (between 3:30 pm and 8:00 am or on weekends or holidays).76
