Child Obesity and Health
2016, International Encyclopedia of Public HealthOverweight trends among Polish schoolchildren before and after the transition from communism to capitalism
2015, Economics and Human BiologyIntergenerational and socioeconomic gradients of child obesity
2013, Social Science and MedicineCitation Excerpt :Latest estimates from the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO, 2011) suggest that overweight (including obesity) among children aged 5–17 years in Spain (33% among boys and 23% among girls) is, together with Greece, Italy and, the UK, among the highest in Europe. Such estimates are especially concerning given its impact on a child's burden of disease in childhood, adolescence and adulthood (Berenson, Srinivasan, Wattigney & Harsha, 1993; Hoffmans, Kromhout & de Lezenne, 1988; Wright, Parker, Lamont & Craft, 2001), and its impact on wellbeing later in life (Gortmaker, Must, Perrin, Sobol & Dietz, 1993; Sargent & Blanchflower, 1994). Obese adolescents are more likely to attempt suicide (Eisenberg, Nuemark-Sztainer & Story, 2003) and to perform worse at school (Schwimmer, Burwinkle & Varni, 2003).
Body mass index at age 25 and all-cause mortality in whites and African Americans: The atherosclerosis risk in communities study
2012, Journal of Adolescent HealthCitation Excerpt :One study examined 629 men in the Glasgow Alumni Cohort whose body weight was measured at the Student Health Service between 1948 and 1949 when the men were at a median age of 22 years [5]. The second study used data from 79,657 Dutch men aged 18 years from compulsory military medical examinations [8]. Both studies found estimates similar to those found here, which is reassuring, given the fact that our data on weight at age 25 were self-reported and was recalled over an interval of ≥20 years.
