Forensic population study of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy in children and young people during the period 1991–2021

2017, ResuscitationCitation Excerpt :A comparison of these results with other OHCA studies is difficult, as few reported the proportions of non-cardiac etiologies within their cohorts [24–26]. Deasy et al. observed that 17% of the autopsied OHCA cases were due to non-cardiac causes, predominantly SUDEP and vascular disease, while Anderson et al. reported 25.2% of all autopsied OHCAs were attributable to alcoholism, epilepsy, and metabolic disorders [24,25] . It is possible that some OHCA cases were not captured by the EMS system although linking EMS records to death certificates/coroner records, resulted in only a small percentage unmatched.
Risk factors and causes of sudden noncardiac death: A nationwide cohort study in Denmark
2015, Heart RhythmCitation Excerpt :The sudden death of a young individual is a devastating event and has a tremendous impact on the individual’s family and community. In recent years, researchers have investigated the incidence and underlying causes of these deaths using different approaches.1–16 Although several definitions of sudden death have been used, it is often referred to as a natural death occurring within 1 hour of the onset of symptoms.1,2,10,17,18
Sudden adult death: An autopsy series of 534 cases with gender and control comparison
2015, Journal of Forensic and Legal MedicineCitation Excerpt :However, it has been shown that sport as a physical stress is a significant risk factor for sudden death.8–10 In the great majority of the published series, most frequent cause of death is sudden cardiac death, mostly caused by CAD.3–5,11–14 In our series, cardiovascular cause was found in 66.1% of the cases.
Clinicopathological features of sudden unexpected infectious death: Population-based study in children and young adults
2012, Forensic Science InternationalCitation Excerpt :In the present series, the high prevalence of co-morbid conditions, especially drug abuse in young males, seems to be one of the main reasons for this increase and for the differences between males and females. As reported in other studies, SUDID is mainly due to respiratory diseases and, to a lesser extent, to cardiac diseases [4–14]. By contrast, neurological SDs are rarely infectious.
