| Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) – Seminar 2008 |
| Date: 4 April 2008 |
Location: London, UK |
| This year’s seminar will focus on three key topics: (1) How does patient privacy legislation affect an editor’s ability to publish? (2) What is publication? — the changing definitions of publication. (3) COPE’s new Best Practice Guidelines. There will also be a short demonstration of an anti-plagiarism system as it is working in a publishing house.
Invited speakers will discuss legislation on privacy and data protection that editors need to be aware of; how editors should respond to more and more data being available online prior to formal peer-reviewed publication; and what happens to a publication after it appears in print.
The newly designed COPE website will be demonstrated, and there will be interactive workshops on common ethical and editorial dilemmas.
Editors, authors and all those interested in improving the standard of publication ethics are welcome.
The seminar will include invited talks:

| Symposium and Workshop:
“The Effect of Armed Conflict on the Health and Development of Infants and Children”
|
| Date: 5-6 May 2008 |
Location: Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. |
| The Programme for Global Paediatric Research (“PGPR”) includes paediatric researchers, societies, and other organizations committed to child health. It was formed in January 2004 to address the disparity between the scientific research resources available in high-income countries and the quantity of scientific research focused on the health of children in mid- and low-income countries. PGPR works at the centre of a global network to inform, educate, facilitate international research cooperation and collaboration, and advocate for research to improve the health of all children.
Symposium
PGPR’s seventh symposium will be held May 5, 2008 in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies (www.pas-meeting.org). This three-part symposium will focus on the effect of armed conflict on the health and development of infants and children. Parts 1 and 3 will be comprised of expert presentations providing an overview of the problems and issues and instances of work that is being done. Part 2 will feature platform presentations from selected abstracts on related issues.
Symposium topics include:
- Overview of Health Problems Faced By Infants and Children During and After Armed Conflict, Peter Salama, UNICEF
- Public Health & The Human Cost of War, Frederick “Skip” M. Burkle, Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, Harvard School of Public Health and University of Hawaii
- Death and Disability Resulting from War in Northern Uganda, Jane Aceng, Lira Regional Referral Hospital and Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda; and
Margaret Nakakeeto, Milago Hospital and Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda
- The Professionalization of Humanitarian Assistance and Its Implications for Child Health, Richard Brennan, International Rescue Committee
- The Distribution, Determinants, and Changing Character of Violence in Crises Around the World, Richard Garfield, Columbia University and World Health Organization
- Abuse of Children During and After Armed Conflict, Harendra de Silva, University of Kelaniya, Ragama, Sri Lanka
- The Effect of Armed Conflict and its Aftermath on the Development of Children in the First Three Years of Life, Raija-Leena Punamaki University of Tampere, Finland
The symposium is open to all those who register for the PAS Meeting.
Workshop
At the follow-up workshop on May 6 colleagues from high-, mid- and low-income countries will meet in order to examine the critical issues and establish clear plans for collaborative study on the effect of armed conflict on the health and development of infants and children and ways to alleviate these affects. One of the goals of the workshop will be to discern the next research steps that should be taken. If you wish to attend the workshop and/or require further information, please use the contact info below.

| 2nd European Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion |
| Date: 9-10 October 2008 |
Location: Paris, France |
| As injury prevention and safety promotion initiatives gain momentum in Europe, the 2nd European
Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion will be a milestone opportunity to take stock of
these developments and help move actions at European and national levels forward. In this respect,
the conference builds on two very important policy papers from the World Health Organization and
European Commission: the WHO Regional Committee Resolution RC55/R9 and the EU Council
Recommendation on the prevention of injuries and the promotion of safety. These documents
strengthen the case of injury prevention and safety promotion by clearly placing it within health
promotion and consumer protection policies in WHO- and EU Member States.
