| Category A: mildly sympomatic |
| At least two of: lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, parotitis, rash, ear, nose and throat infections |
| Category B: moderately sympomatic |
| Single episode of a severe bacterial infection |
| Lymphocytic interstitial pneumonitis |
| Anaemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia |
| Cardiomyopathy, nephropathy, hepatitis, diarrhoea |
| Candidiasis, severe varicella/zoster or herpes simplex virus |
| Category C: severely sympomatic (AIDS) |
| Two serious bacterial infections |
| Encephalopathy (acquired microcephaly, cognitive delay, abnormal neurology) |
| Wasting syndrome (severe failure to thrive or downward crossing two weight centiles) |
| Opportunistic infections (PCP, cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis, disseminated fungal infections) |
