2015, Preventive MedicineCitation Excerpt :While one of the two longitudinal studies found a predictive effect of adolescents' internet use and video game play on anxiety symptoms one year later (Ohannessian, 2009), another longitudinal study could not confirm this prediction (Selfhout et al., 2009). In three cross-sectional studies the association between internet use or watching TV, and anxiety symptoms was not significant (Comer et al., 2008; Gross et al., 2002; Harman et al., 2005), but the amount of time spent watching TV was positively related to trauma symptoms (Singer et al., 1998), and screen time to anxiety symptoms (Cao et al., 2011). In another study, a u-shaped association between the time spent playing video games and anxiety symptoms was found (Allahverdipour et al., 2010).
