2021, Clinical Nutrition ESPENCitation Excerpt :The oral route is the most commonly used but adherence may be impaired by gastrointestinal effects and for difficulties in swallowing capsules [12]; the intramuscular route seems to be more efficient [13]. Supplementation with high doses of vitamin D, known as mega-dose or “stoss therapy,” refers to administering high doses of vitamin D by oral or intramuscular route for short periods of time [14]. The dosages vary among the studies; there is no consensus which dose is megadose.
Healing of vitamin D deficiency rickets complicating hypophosphatasia suggests a role beyond circulating mineral sufficiency for vitamin D in musculoskeletal health
2020, BoneCitation Excerpt :However, the tongues of metaphyseal lucency, especially in the wrists, would be unusual in vitamin D deficiency rickets, and instead consistent with an associated disease such as HPP. After just six weeks of cholecalciferol therapy, impressive improvement was documented in the provisional zones of calcification consistent with the rapid response typically seen in vitamin D deficiency rickets [1,6,17–21], while the metaphyseal lucencies associated with HPP [14,15,22] became more apparent. Such dramatic improvement in this timeframe would not be seen in X-linked hypophosphatemia or in one of the metaphyseal dysplasias, renal osteodystrophy, or commonly in HPP [2].
