Although serious head injuries requiring neurosurgery or intensive care are relatively rare, more minor injuries are very common, and are responsible for continuing troublesome symptoms in many children. Hitherto we haven't been very good at predicting who will get persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS), and our advice to families when we send children home from emergency departments (EDs) or wards, may be unhelpful. Can we do better? We know that imaging won't help, as most of these children with have normal MRI and CT scans.
