Ramstedt described his operation for infantile pyloric stenosis in 1912 and it remains a safe and effective procedure. The first report of laparoscopic pyloromyotomy was in 1991. Since then there has been debate about the relative merits of the open and laparoscopic operations. A systematic review in 2004 suggested a shorter time to recovery but a greater risk of complications after laparoscopy.
