Conroy et al seem to miss the point somewhat in bemoaning lack of expertise among the doctors surveyed. They appear to want new medical graduates to have an unlikely range of skills. The doctors in the posts described are by definition 'in training', otherwise they would be in independent practice. The whole purpose of that training is to raise their competence in diagnosis and prescribing in relation to pediatric practice. While some like to pretend otherwise there is in fact no separation between service and training. Junior doctors learn their trade hands on, supervised by more senior doctors. No amount of classroom teaching is any substitute for direct exposure to patients. |
