Re: The BPSU, Reye's syndrome, and aspirin

Dear Editor

In their excellent leading article on the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit, Verity and Preece refer to the value of the data from the Reye's syndrome (RS) surveillance study in demonstrating the decline in RS in the British Isles following the 1986 Committee on Safety of Medicines (CSM) warning about the use of aspirin in children under 12 years.[1]

We wish to bring this observation up to date by highlighting the value of these data in further informing the CSM's decision in April 2002, that the age limit on the warning should, for children with feverish illnesses, be extended to cover those aged up to and including 15 years.[2]

To date, this new advice has not been given the same amount of publicity as was the case in 1986. Paediatricians may wish to remind parents, colleagues and young teenagers themselves, of its existence, especially as we are about to enter the 'flu season'.
