Why do poor children squint?

From a birth cohort of 14 541 children in Avon, southwest England data on visual problems were available from 7825 children at the age of 7 years (C Williams and colleagues. British Journal of Ophthalmology 2008;92:959–64). The prevalence of manifest strabismus was 2.3%, of past or present amblyopia 3.6%, and of hypermetropia 4.8%. Convergent strabismus was associated with preterm birth and with a family history of hypermetropia or of strabismus/amblyopia. Divergent strabismus was related to maternal smoking in late pregnancy and intrauterine growth retardation. Amblyopia was related to maternal smoking and a family history of strabismus/amblyopia or parental hypermetropia. Children from the lowest occupational social class grouping were almost twice as likely to have hypermetropia as children from the highest social class.
